+ Laura Uy from ART + SOUL Creative Co.
Hello lovely deerlings! Cory kindly asked me to do a guest post for Cranberry Deer, so here I am, taking over her lovely blog (just for today!).
My name is Laura Uy and I am a self-taught artist living in Vancouver, Canada. I currently work at an art studio and I love to experiment with watercolour, acrylic, ink, pen, and digital art. I would describe my style as child-like, hopeful, and whimsical.
Here are a few samples of my recent artwork in three different mediums:
"Innocence"
acrylic on canvas
17" x 17"
This painting was inspired by magical human-sized flowers, brave little birds, simple childhood innocence, and my partiality towards that particular shade of turquoise mint. I used acrylic paint and focused on keeping the painting simple with smooth, clean lines. In an era where so many children are glued to digital devices, I wanted this painting to evoke the simplicity, curiosity, and beauty of a child surrounded by nature. I don't think this painting would have the same effect if the girl was holding an iPad instead of a bird!
"Dream a New Dream"
ink pen on paper
5" x 7" print
You know when you first get a new notebook or journal and you start off the first page with the best handwriting you can possibly muster? Well this typography print was the first entry in a new sketchbook I got, so of course I busted out my newly-acquired Pigma Micron Archival Ink pens and went at it full-force! I used a few pens with different-sized tips so I could render the main quote with a thicker-tipped pen and use a super fine-lined pen to create all those tiny details. This quote motivates me to keep pursuing my dreams every day, one step at a time.
"Floral Inspiration"
watercolour on paper
8" x 10" print
This one is dedicated to every woman in the world. My love for peonies, garden roses, and floral prints helped me dream up this watercolour illustration. Sometimes my art is also inspired by my faith and this particular quote is based on Psalm 139:14. I think everyone needs an uplifting message once in awhile so I always strive to keep my artwork bright and cheerful!
For this particular painting I first sketched out the floral border, and then filled in the pencil drawing with watercolour paints and a very soft, thin brush. I mixed a variety of green and coral shades and then meticulously painted each vine, leaf, and petal. I actually painted the quote on a separate sheet of paper and then digitally merged the two paintings together and touched up the details using Adobe Photoshop.
All three of these prints are currently available in my Etsy shop, and I'm continually working on adding new products!
If you have any other questions about my artistic process or if you would like a custom piece, feel free to message me. And if you'd like to see more of my art (or hear more of my nonsensical ramblings), you can head over to my blog ART + SOUL to see what I'm up to these days!
